Ireland- A storm of protest in Mid-West

A storm of protest has blown up in the Mid-West over an Aer Lingus decision to axe the Shannon route to Heathrow. This is a massive blow to the manufacturing and tourist sectors. The decision has also been savagely criticized by FG and Labour. Local FF councillors have come out against Aer Lingus . However FF Minister Noel Dempsey appears to have no plans to intervene. There appears to be a move to down grade Shannon by stealth. This will test the loyalties of local FF activists.

According to the
Irish Independent-"THOUSANDS of jobs are at risk in the west following the decision by Aer Lingus to axe its Shannon route to Heathrow, it was claimed last night.
Some of the region's top executives said the decision sounded the economic 'death knell' for area.
Their warning came as it became clear the Government is not going to block Aer Lingus's decision to end the Shannon to London service despite intensifying political pressure.
Transport Minister Noel Dempsey was told of the decision last Friday.
But it emerged last night he has no plans to intervene.
Mr Dempsey's spokesperson said: "No. It's a commercial decision by Aer Lingus. It is regrettable.............................................."
