Rugby Union-Geordan Murphy stakes his claim for an Irish place

An otherwise drab game between Ireland and Scotland at Murrayfield today was brightened by a spectacular performance from Geordan Murphy. It is no secret that Eddie O Sullivan has harboured thoughts of omitting him from the 30 man panel which is due to be named tomorrow morning. Murphy must be included in the squad. His attacking fetching and anticipatory skills are second to none.

Of great concern is the knee injury sustained by Shane Horgan prior to the game. His loss would be a severe blow to Ireland's World Cup prospects. Ireland's back division would be severely weakened as an attacking force. If Ireland is to qualify from the Group of Death it must avoid injuries to key players. As the game today illustrates Ireland has not got the strength in depth of teams such as France, South Africa and New Zealand.
